I’ve been talking a lot about ChatGPT lately, but I still hadn’t done an episode of my podcast dedicated to the subject. Well, now it’s done.

For this episode, I was thrilled to welcome back Hung Lee, who has an impressive track record in the recruitment industry. He's written 334 issues of his newsletter Recruiting Brainfood, hosted 192 live episodes of Brainfood Live, and has extensive knowledge and insights on the industry. In other words, he's the ideal guest to provide a deep understanding of the impact ChatGPT could have on recruitment.

In October 2022, Hung began experimenting with Avatar AI, a tool that generates avatars based on real photos. As he played around with it, he realized the potential of such technology, and thought to himself, "this is huge." Intrigued by the possibilities of generative AI tools, which can create various forms of content like texts, images, and music, he went on to explore other options like GPT3, Dall-E, and Midjourney.

Despite his previous experiences, it wasn't until he came across ChatGPT that he truly believed AI had the power to revolutionize recruitment.

How ChatGPT will change the way we hire people.

In the recruitment industry, the demand for text generation is infinite. From crafting job descriptions to reaching out to candidates and following up with them, there's a constant need for well-written, persuasive text. This is where ChatGPT comes in handy, as it can assist with generating any type of text that's needed.

The potential of ChatGPT to become a mainstream tool is quite high. Its usefulness is clear and straightforward - just ask it a question in the chat, and it will provide an answer. There's no need to be a tech expert to make use of it. This ease of use makes it accessible to everyone and allows for quick integration into recruitment workflows.

Hung predicts that generative AI, specifically AI-assisted text generation, will have a significant impact on recruitment in four ways:

  1. The quality level of email outreach will improve. This will increase candidate engagement in the short term. However, over time, candidates may become wary of these AI-generated emails and doubt their authenticity, leading to a lack of trust.

  2. As a result, sending emails may no longer be free, and recruiters may have to add a paywall to give credibility to the messages they send.

  3. Recruiters will slow down cold outreach and invest in nurturing. Since sending emails will become more expensive and candidates' mistrust will be high, recruiters will be forced to create deeper relationships thanks to nurturing.

  4. Generative AI will increase employee productivity, and headcount will be reduced. As Hung Lee says: “AI will not replace recruiters, but recruiters who know how to use generative AI will replace those who don't”
